EUROCHALLENGE

Triumph Lyubertsy earned a surprise away win at Karsiyaka on Tuesday night thanks in no small part to a great effort on both ends of the floor by Kyle Landry.

The Canadian center was inspired on offense, coming up with a season-high 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the floor, including making four of his five attempts from behind the three-point arc.

He was nothing short of rock-solid on defense, coralling 10 rebounds, stealing three balls and blocking one shot.

Landry’s efficiency index rating of 32 was enough to propel his team to their first victory in this stage of the competition and earn him Last 16 Week 4 MVP honors.

Tim Blue named the Player of the Month

KORISLIIGA: Tim Blue named the Player of the Month Feb 1, 2012 (by Rauno Hurmalainen)

American forward, Tim Blue (205-F-84, college: Middle Tenn.St.) of KTP Basket, has been named the Player of Month in Finland. KTP was 4-2 in their six games during the month of January and he was the team’s key player was averaging 26.3 ppg, 7.2 rpg, and 2.8 big during that stretch. Blue is currently leading the Finnish Korisliiga in scoring with an average of 22.5 points per game and stands third in the league in rebounds with 10.5 rpg and third in blocks with 1.3 bpg.

Jackson named Player of the Week

American guard, Stefon Jackson (196-G-85), put on an extraordinary performance in the last round for second-ranked Aalstar, receiving a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 12.

The 26-year old player was the main contributor (21 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists) to his team’s victory, helping them to crush his former team, Verviers-Pepinster, with 19-point margin of 90-71. Aalstar is placed in the 2nd position in Belgian D1 and they will look to improve on their 7-4 record later this week. Jackson was alstar’s top player in his first season with the team as he works to bring this club back to the Championship Final for a 2nd straight season. The former UTEP star has very solid stats this year and he is in the league’s top ten in rebounds (8th best: 5.5rpg) and averages an impressive 51.0% FGP.

The Player of the week is based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc. The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) – 2*BSAG – 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM – 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) – 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) – (FTA-FTM).

EuroCup celebrates the start of 10th season

The tipoff of the game this Tuesday in St. Petersburg, Russia will mean that the Eurocup’s 10th-anniversary season has begun. Over that decade, thousands of basketball players from 127 different clubs have entertained more than a million fans in 27 countries across the continent. The Eurocup, originally known as the ULEB Cup, has brought elite-level basketball to arenas and audiences all over Europe and the world. As such, it has also played a major role in the continued growth of the basketball not just throughout Europe, but globally, with Eurocup teams having been home to Olympic, World, European, South American, African and Oceanic champions over the last decade.

This season, 32 teams from eight countries will vie for the honor of lifting the Eurocup’s 10th-anniversary title. The winner’s journey will last 16 games through countless hours of travel to many countries. At the end of a decade’s worth of great basketball, it will have proven to be a journey well worth the effort for clubs, players and fans alike. Eurosport, beginning its seventh season as broadcasting partner of the competitions, brings Eurocup action to more than 50 million homes in 57 countries and 17 languages.

Clifford Hammonds (191-G-85, college: Clemson) of Banvit Basketbol Kulubu (Turkey-TBL) will play in Group E and Ronald Moore (183-G-88, college: Siena) of PGE Turow Zgorzelec (Poland-PLK) will play in Group H.

FIBA EuroChallenge regular season begins

FIBA Europe has announced the list of teams that will participate in the 2011-12 EuroChallenge. The EuroChallenge Regular Season line-up will feature 32 clubs and Group play will begin this week.

WORLDWIDE will have four players competing in this year’s competition. Louis Dale (180-G-88, college: Cornell) of BG Goettingen (Germany-1.Bundesliga) will compete in Group B against Besiktas (Turkey-TBL), Leiden (Holland), and Armia (Georgia-Superleague). Anthony Hilliard (193-G-86, college: Elizabeth City) of Artland Dragons Quakenbrueck (Germany-1.Bundesliga) will compete in Group B against Szolnok (Hungary-A Division), Keravnos (Cyprus-Division A), and Pau-Lacq-Orthez (France-ProA). Kyle Landry (206-F-86, college: N. Arizona) of Triumph Lyubertsy (Russia-PBL) and Stefon Jackson (196-G-85, college: UTEP) of Generali Okapi Aalstar (Belgium-D1) will play in Group F. Group F also consists of Etha (Cyprus-Division A) and Olin Edirne (Turkey-TBL).

2011 NBA D-League Draft Recap

In just two hours on Thursday night, 127 players were selected to the 16 teams in the NBA D-League, at a pace of more than one player a minute. The 90-second clock between picks was tested about four times throughout the night, as teams stacked up behind one another to, essentially, decide their future.

WORLDWIDE had three players selected in this year’s draft. Greg Washington (208-F/C-Hofstra) was selected 14^th in the 3^rd round to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers; 45^th overall. He set the Hofstra career blocks record and finished his career on Long Island with 275 rejections becoming only the second post player in team history to start 30 or more games in consecutive seasons. Tyrone Kent (196-G-Toldeo) was selected 15^th in the 5^th round to the Canton Charge and Bruce Price (191-G-Tennessee State) was selected 5^th in the 8^th round to the Dakota Wizards.

Banvit signs deal with Clifford Hammonds

Clifford Hammonds (191-G-85, college: Clemson) became a new member of Banvit. The American guard penned a one-year deal with his new club. He heads to Banvit from ASVEL, where he spent last season. He appeared 35 times in ProA averaging 10.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.1 assists. Hammonds also added 11.5 ppg, 3.3 rpg and 4.0 apg in 6 EuroCup games. In Euroleague Qualifying Round, Hammonds collected 9.3 ppg, 2 rpg, 4.8 apg and 1.8 spg. Before ASVEL, Clifford Hammonds spent one year with Peristeri Athens. He had 12.9 ppg, 3.1 rpg and 3.7 apg for 26 games in Greek league. Hammonds already played in Turkey as a member of Darussafaka and Efes Pilsen. He is a product of the Clemson University, where he graduated three years ago.

Shane Edwards joins Verona

Shane Edwards (201-F-87, college: UALR) will continue his career in Italy. The American forward signed a deal with Tezenis Verona and it will be his first year overseas. Edwards spent last season with the NBA D-League team New Mexico Thunderbirds. In 45 games he averaged 16.7 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists. He participated at the D-League All-Star game and was named Gatorade All-D-League Honorable Mention -11. During the summer, Edwards worked out with the San Antonio Spurs and Chicago Bulls. Season 2009/10, Shane Edwards spent with Albuquerque Thunderbirds and for 39 games that season Edwards had 12.7 ppg and 5.3 rpg. He graduated at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2009.

Anthony Hilliard Coming to the Beko BBL to play for the Artland Dragons

Anthony Hilliard (193-G/F-86, college: Elizabeth City) will play his third professional basketball season in the German Beko BBL after playing the last two years in Belgium. Hilliard is a 25 year old 193cm shooting guard/small forward from Fayetteville, North Carolina. His strong rebounding skills stand out as he has never averaged less than 6 rebounds per season in Belgium and averaged 11.0 rpg in his last three years of college ball. Hilliard comes from Generali Okapi Aalstar (Belgium) where he played EuroChallenge Qualifying Round: 2 games: 11.5ppg, 7.5rpg, 1.5apg, 2.0spg; Belgian League: 38 games: 14.2ppg, Reb-4 (7.3rpg), 1.9apg, FGP: 53.5%, 3PT: 28.0%, FT: 62.5%. He demonstrated last season in the Belgium league that he can be very consistent as he scored in double figures in 31 games including a stretch of 24 games in a row. The year before as a rookie, he played for VOO Verviers-Pepinster (Belgium-D1): 32 games: 13.1ppg, 6.4rpg, 1.3apg, 1.1spg, FGP: 46.4%, 3PT: 42.3%, FT: 73.0%. He started his basketball career at Elizabeth City (NCAA2) from 2005-2009. In his senior year, he played 28 games: 22.9ppg, 11.0rpg, 2.5apg, 1.6spg, FGP: 47.4%, 3PT: 33.3%, FT: 68.6%. Kyle Landry (206-86, college: N. Arizona) has signed with Triumph Lyubertsy of the Russian PBL. Landry, formerly of BK Prostejov (Czech Rep-NBL), was named to FIBA EuroChallenge 2nd team in 2011, finished the EuroChallenge ranked 2nd in rebounding with 9.6 rebounds per game, and he also led BK Prostejov (Czech Rep-NBL) into the round of the final 16. In 44 games of the Czech Rep. League, he averaged Score-3 (15.0 ppg), Reb-3 (8.6 rpg), Steals-5(1.6 spg), FGP: 55.6%, 3PT: 39.0%, FT: 72.9%. He also averaged 13.4 ppg, Reb-1 (9.6 rpg), 1.1 apg, 1.4 spg, FGP: 50.4%, 3PT: 27.3%, FT: 76.6%, in 14 EuroChallenge games.
